Parliament Deputy Speaker Mohamed Abou El-Enein approved, on Sunday, a law that aims at protecting and developing Egypt’s lakes and fish wealth, stressing that Egypt should be listed on the world map in the fishing industry.
Abou El-Enein asserted that Egypt has 14 million acres of water bodies, noting that it produces 2 million tons of fish annually, of which only 3% is manufactured, and the rest is used on a daily basis.
The statements came out during the parliament‘s plenary session, chaired by Counselor Dr. Hanafi Jabali while considering the report of the Agriculture and Irrigation Committee on the government-drafted law that aims at protecting and developing lakes, fisheries, and fish wealth.
“With this massive amount of water bodies, Egypt should be on the global fishing map, especially since we are the sixth country in the world with fish production,” Abou El-Enein affirmed.
In the same vein, the parliament deputy speaker said: “I hope to see law addressing the new investments in the seas and fish manufacturing of all kinds. This will certainly make Egypt witness a significant shift.”
Moreover, he reiterated the importance of investment and export in the fishing industry, pointing out that this matter needs guidance in the issue of manufacturing all fish species.
Eventually, Abou El-Enein called for establishing lakes in the deserts for fish farming, as well as making good use of water in agriculture processes in order to reconstruct the desert.
